Sally Rademaker, DVM
Sally Rademaker, DVM Veterinary Advisor
Dr. Rademaker and her husband John moved to Tucson, Arizona, from San Jose, California, in December of 2001. They loved our California life, but life in Tucson continues to be the best thing ever! Affectionately known as Dr. Rad, she left behind an 18 year career at the small animal clinic in San Jose that she joined 2 weeks after graduating from vet school. She then embarked on a 19 year career at Sunrise Pet Clinic in Tucson. It could not have been a better match. In those 19 years at Sunrise she was surrounded by doctors and staff who were skilled not only in Traditional Medicine, but also in Alternative Medicine. She retired in May 2021 and has no regrets about the decision, but she truly misses the profession that she started as a technician/ receptionist way, way back when she was 19 years old. The Rademaker 4-leggeds have been the best teachers imaginable. Their pitty/rott Joey was a puppy from an orphaned litter found in the Sierra Nevada foothills. She was a fast and agile learner so Dr. Rad felt like a brilliant teacher, when truly it was the opposite. Their Pima Animal Control Center (PACC) -adopted dog, Weezee, was way smarter than Dr. Rad and by that point as a dog trainer she understood my limitations. Their additional PACC-adopted dog Duke was a pure german shepherd, according to DNA. Although he had goofy, floppy ears that did not stand, he was all business when it came to guarding the home and the leash territory. He adored his “sister” Weezee. Their current PACC adopted dog, Mowgli, is a tripod. His right front leg was amputated at PACC when he was about 4 months old. They adopted him from his first owner who did a lovely job with him. He seems to be oblivious to the need for the “extra” leg that other dogs have. All of their cats have chosen them, in one way or another. Reminder to all - cats are NOT small dogs. And last but not least, their pet rat Moki had a huge personality. All of the deceased Rademaker dogs have lost their lives to cancer. Most of the deceased Rademaker cats have lost their lives to cancer. The Rademaker rat lost her life to cancer. Subsequently, Dr. Rad and John figure that every moment of fun and love and joy counts for a great deal. Environment enrichment is our mantra!
